EXTRACTS FROM THE HOLY HADITHS

The Hadith are the traditions of deeds and words attributed to the Prophet Muhammad which, after the Koran, provide the basis of Islamic Law and are second in importance.

The Prophet used to sit with his Companions in a circle. His sayings and actions were carefully noted and memorized. Thousands of hadiths were collected dealing with topics such as religious faith, purification, fasting, pilgrimage, trading transactions, inheritance, punishment, warfare, animal sacrifice, food, clothing, manners, Paradise and Hell.

Extracts from the holy Hadiths

Muslim 786 Asked about (3:169) "Think not of those who are slain in Allah's way as dead. Nay, they are alive, finding their sustenance in the presence of the Lord..." The Prophet said: "The souls of the martyrs live in the bodies of green birds who have their nests in the chandeliers hung from the throne of the Almighty..."

The Prophet said: "Those who paint pictures would be punished on the Day of Resurrection and it would be said to them: 'Breathe soul into what you have created'". The commentator says that an artist wishes to rival the creator or to create something to worship? Even photographs or statues are not exempted from this stricture and yet we all have seen photographs of the Ayatollah and of martyrs in that most Islamic of countries, Iran.

Muslim 886 Mohawks beware.

The Prophet forbade Qaz'a. This means having a part of a boy's head shaved and leaving a part unshaven.

Muslim 935 The Prophet said: "Kill the snakes having stripes over them and short-tailed snakes for they cause miscarriage of a pregnant woman and adversely affect the eyesight." He forbade the killing of domestic snakes. This only applies to Medina where some of the jinns have embraced Islam and have taken the form of house snakes.

Muslim 936 The Prophet commanded the killing of geckos (house lizards) for they are "noxious little creatures". There are ordained a hundred virtues for killing one on the first stroke.

Muslim 938 The Prophet said: "A woman was punished in Hell because she had kept a cat tied up without food or water until it died."

Muslim 946 The Prophet said: "He who played chess is like one who dyed his hand with the flesh and blood of swine."

Muslim 953 The Prophet said: "I shall be pre-eminent amongst the descendants of Adam on the Day of Resurrection... and the first whose intercession will be accepted by Allah."

Muslim 954 There was a shortage of water. A small quantity was brought to the Prophet and he placed his hand in it. Water spouted from his fingers enough for the 50 or 80 present to perform their ablutions.

Muslim 1140 The Prophet said: "The majority of those who entered the Fire of Hell was that of women." "So avoid the allurement of women." "Allah tests men by means of women but great is the harm done to men.

Muslim 1149 The Prophet said: "When it will be the Day of Resurrection Allah will deliver to every Muslim a Jew or a Christian and say:

"That is your rescue from Hell-Fire". The Muslim may have sins as heavy as a mountain but the wrong beliefs of the non-believers would save space in Paradise."

Muslim 1153 There was a Muslim who used to transcribe for the Prophet but he ran away as a rebel and joined the People of the Book. (Jews or Christians?) Allah caused his death, so the unbelievers dug a grave and buried him. Three times they tried to bury him but each time the earth threw him out on to the surface. In the end they left him unburied.

Muslim 1167 One night A'isha (wife No 3) was jealous of another wife. The Prophet said that she had a devil attached to her: everyone has a devil, the Prophet included except that Allah counters his.

Muslim 1176 The Prophet said: "Every person in Paradise will have two wives." Also: He said: "Those who get into Paradise will have their faces as bright as stars in the sky". They will neither pass water, nor void excrement, nor will they suffer from catarrh, nor will they spit, and their combs would be made of gold, and their sweat will be musk, the fuel of their brazier will be aloes, and their wives will be large-eyed maidens and their form would be alike as one single person after the form of Adam sixty cubits tall."

Muslim 1177 The Prophet said: "In Paradise there would be no dissension between the two wives and no enmity in their hearts." When questioned about what would happen to the food if there was no defecating, the Prophet said that their eating would be digested in the form of belching.

Muslim 1178 The Prophet said: "In Paradise you should never fall ill; you live for ever. You would remain young and never grow old. You would always live in affluent circumstances and never become destitute."

Muslim 1181 The Prophet said: "The hearts of those who enter Paradise would be like those of the hearts of birds." (The commentator says that the hearts of birds are free from jealousy or rancour. He has not seen our seagulls arguing amongst each other, picking on each other and vying for food from picnickers.)

Muslim 1182 A group was with the Prophet when they heard a terrible sound. "That," said the Prophet, "is a rock which was thrown seventy years ago in Hell and it has been constantly slipping down and now reached the bottom." Also the Prophet said: "There will be some to whose ankles the fire will reach, some to whose knees, and to whose waists and some to whose collar-bone the fire will reach."

Muslim 1183 The Prophet said: "There is no death for the inmates of Hell-fire and that increases their grief. The molar tooth or the canine tooth of an unbeliever will be like Mt Uhud and the thickness of his skin a three nights' journey." (The new body will be so gross and formidable to last Hell-Fire for ever.) The Prophet said: "The distance of the two shoulders of the non-believer in Hell will be a three-day journey for a swift rider." Talking of mischief, the Prophet said that one of them flogged his wife as if she was a slave-girl, another laughs when he breaks wind. "I saw Amr. bin Amir al-Khuyai dragging his intestines in fire and he was the one who devoted animals to deity." "In Hell are people, in the wrath of Allah, in whose hands are whips thick like the tail of an ox.

Muslim 1184 The Prophet said: "On the Day of Resurrection the people would be assembled barefooted, naked and uncircumcised." A'isha asked whether males and females would be together and look at each other. The Prophet replied that the matter would be too serious for that.

Muslim 1185 The Prophet said: "On that Day the perspiration would spread upon the earth up to their ears. 'The sun would draw so close to the people that there would be left only a distance of one mile." (At the moment it is a little over 92,000,000 miles)

Muslim 1187 The Prophet said: "When the dead body is placed in the grave, he listens to the sound of the shoes as his friends and relatives walk after burying him."  Hadith Malik 16:71 Omar passed urine in a street and then performed ablution and washed his face and hands and did the wiping over the head. He was then called to do a funeral prayer. When he entered the mosque he did the wiping of the shoes.

Hadithn Malik 20:81 The Prophet said that if pre-coital fluid should ooze out of the male sexual organ, wash it and perform ablution as for prayer.

Hadith Malik 362:1221 Ibn Fahd said: "I have some slave girls who are better than my wives, but I do not desire that they should all become pregnant. Shall I do azl (withdrawal) with them?" Hajjaj said: "They are your fields of cultivation. If you wish to irrigate them then do so, if not keep them dry."

Hadith Malik 364:1234 If a woman suckles a baby she becomes its foster mother and her husband a foster father. If a man has two wives and one suckles a boy and the other a girl, the boy cannot marry the girl as the foster father of each is the same. (On the other hand purdah is not necessary with foster relations). (Some of the ulama say that that suckling ten times is needed to establish a foster-relationship.)

Hadith Malik 364:1239 The rule pertaining to foster-relationship only applies to children under two years. Thus (Malik 365:1243) A grown up man fed with milk of a woman does not entail fostership.

Hadith Malik 365:1245 A man said: "My wife has wilfully given my slavegirl with whom I used to cohabit her own milk to drink. What is my relationship to my slave-girl?" Omar said: "Punish your wife and go into your slave-girl."

The husband reported the matter to Umar who consulted an old midwife. She said that menstrual blood must have continued despite her pregnancy to her first husband. Umar dissolved the marriage and told the woman: "It is just as well that no evil report reached me about you and that the paternity of your first husband has been verified."

Hadith Malik 486:1511 A slave-girl had used sorcery on Hafsah, wife of the Prophet. The slave-girl was sentenced and executed.

Hadith Malik 493:1520 Ma'iz bin Malik came to Abu Bakr and said: "I am a base fellow for I have committed adultery."

Abu Bakr replied: "Repent before the Lord and tell no one else." The man still felt guilty and went to Umar who gave him the same reply. Still feeling guilty he went to the Prophet who asked if he was ill or mad, married or single. On hearing that Ma'iz was healthy and married, the Prophet ordered him to be stoned to death.

Hadith Malik 493:1524 The Prophet was told: "My son was employed with this man; he committed adultery with his wife. I gave 100 sheep and a slave girl in compensation." The Prophet said: "Take back your sheep and your slave girl. Your son will receive 100 lashes and a year in exile. As the adulteress has confessed she will be stoned."

Hadith Malik 493:1530 Ibn Shihab said that a man committing sodomy should be stoned whether he be married or unmarried.

Hadith Malik 496:1539 Two men were abusing each other. A said to B: "My parents were not adulterers." Umar took this to mean that A was implying that B's parents were and sentenced A to 80 lashes.

Hadith Malik 496:1540 A man went on a journey with the slave-girl of his wife and went into her. The envious wife reported it to Umar who said the husband would be stoned unless the slave girl was owned by him. The wife spoke out to save him: "I had given her as a gift."

When the sheep comes home or the fruit are picked and cut and they are stolen the hand will be cut off provided the price is 3 dirhams or more.

Hadith Malik 499:1549 Safwan fell asleep in the mosque with a sheet of cloth under his head. A thief stole the sheet but Safwan woke up, caught him and took him to the Prophet. When Muhammad ordered his hand to be cut off Safwan relented and tried to say that he had given the thief the cloth. The Prophet said that it was now too late to rescind the decision.
